Laminar Mixing

Typical aspects that can be analyzed are :

  • dispersion of pigments into polymers -compounding
  • homogenization of material properties
  • mixing of non-miscible fluids by generation of interface, and more.

Controlling mixing is essential to understanding phenomena such as the degradation of physical properties, lack of pigment dispersion, and low stretching rate of the interfaces.

The residence time distribution of material flowing through a machine can be calculated, or the evolution of the segregation scale and the local stretching/shearing/folding of the fluid (accumulation of local deformations of the fluid).

Different configurations of the process can be compared to select the optimal design, detect local defects (zones where the dispersion is low) and proceed to improve the given process (by geometric and/or operating parameters modifications).
