FluentUV

Ultraviolet disinfection for drinking and wastewater has been receiving significant attention lately, particularly with regard to eliminating cryptosporidium.  Flow characteristics have a significant impact on the performance of UV systems.  While UV reactor performance must be proven under site-specific piping configurations, physical testing for all possible scenarios can be prohibitively expensive.  FluentUV is a tool that provides easy access to CFD for analysis of UV disinfection systems.

FluentUV features:

  • A choice of circular or rectangular cross-section reactor geometries, along with the capability of handling custom or proprietary reactors
  • Automated creation of upstream and/or downstream piping geometry
  • Automated creation of the computational mesh
  • Automated post-processing, including irradiance distribution
  • Output that can be used to determine Reduced Equivalent Dose and Reactor Efficiency values for a range of organisms.

CFD allows the prediction of irradiance distribution in real UV disinfection systems without the assumption of uniform flow. This easy-to-use tool puts the power of 3D flow modeling into the hands of UV disinfection system designers.
