With the primary objective of device optimization, Medtronic used CFD to simulate the performance of their Bio-Medicus Blood Pump (BP-80)™. The device consists of three rotating cones, which produce the centrifugal pumping effect. Medtronic plans to continue using CFD to further optimize the blood pump, and other devices such as blood oxygenators.
