A typical filter underdrain block is assembled into groups called laterals. The purpose of the filter underdrain system is to collect the filtered water, and to act as a distributor of "backwash" water during the periodic cleaning cycle. Fluent's flow modeling software can be used to predict the flow patterns in the distribution flumes and the pressure drop across the underdrain.
