Thermoforming

Thermoforming is a process by which a thermoplastic sheet is heated and formed by forcing it into a surface mold. It is a very cost-effective way to manufacture relatively complex product shapes such as the interior panel of a car door, the interior panels of a refrigerator, and various food and medical packages. CFD solutions from Fluent provide detailed information on the thickness distribution in the formed part. The CFD results can also be used to adjust the temperature distribution in the sheet as well as the motion of the different mold parts to ensure the proper thickness distribution. This method is faster and cheaper than using the traditional "trial and error" approach to design.
