Due to factors such as aerodynamic considerations, styling, packaging, and the addition of new components, the space available under the hood continues to be reduced and overcrowded, making underhood thermal management a critical part of the design process. By performing flow and thermal analysis with CFD early in the design cycle, users can identify any problems earlier, which significantly reduces the design time and cost while increasing the reliability of the vehicle. FLUENT offers key technical advantages in the area of thermal management for front-end flow, underhood and underbody analysis. Full thermal analysis, including radiation, convection and conduction, provides accurate thermal predictions on key components. FLUENT’s “thin shell” model can easily model multi-dimensional conductive heat transfer in components with a relatively small thickness, such as heat shields. FLUENT also includes both a view-factor based and discrete ordinates radiation model as well as volumetric heat exchanger and fan models fully integrated within the intuitive interface.
