studentFLUENT Educational CFD Tool Enables Classroom Success for Colleges and Universities in North America

September 7, 2005, Lebanon, New Hampshire, USA

Fluent Inc., the worldwide leader in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and services, announces the release of studentFLUENT, the student edition of the leading commercial CFD software, FLUENT 6. studentFLUENT provides the full CFD solver interface and extensive range of physical modeling capabilities that commercial engineers use when working with FLUENT 6, however, the maximum model size is limited to 20,000 cells. studentFluent is available to colleges and universities in North America. According to the studentFLUENT Product Manager, Dr. Shane Moeykens, "studentFLUENT should provide intermediate and advanced engineering students the opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge and experience with the world's most popular general-purpose CFD solver, FLUENT 6."

The Mechanical Engineering department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VT) is incorporating studentFLUENT into its Fluids-Heat Transfer Design course, which is a required class for its senior engineering students. There are over 250 students enrolled in the class this fall. Students will use studentFLUENT to illustrate fundamental problems, including some principles of fluid machinery design. The same students are concurrently enrolled in a two-semester senior design project course. Many of these projects require some type of CFD analysis for which the students will be able to use studentFLUENT. According to Dr. Karen Thole, Assistant Department Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at VT, "studentFLUENT provides students with a useful tool for their design projects. In addition, employers of VT students have voiced the need for BSME students to have some CFD experience. The use of studentFLUENT in a required course is vital in that it represents a modernization to the VT ME curriculum; we believe this modernization will help our students gain fundamental knowledge and increased skills."

Students can purchase studentFLUENT directly from Fluent Inc. without going through university procurement channels, and can use it on their own PCs outside of campus facilities. Not only is this convenient for students, but it also reduces hardware and software costs for the university. The cost of studentFLUENT is $99 per license.

Cornell University plans to use studentFLUENT in its Intermediate Fluid Dynamics course offered by the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Each spring, this course is typically offered to about 45 students. Dr. Rajesh Bhaskaran, Director of the Swanson Engineering Simulation Program at Cornell, commented, "With studentFLUENT, students will be able to complete their FLUENT assignments on their own computers at their convenience. We believe this will be popular with students as a significant majority has expressed a strong preference for running software on their personal machines." Each FLUENT assignment is followed with class sessions to reinforce and expand upon relevant theoretical and numerical concepts. Dr. Bhaskaran is also developing an intermediate level textbook that integrates analysis and computations using FLUENT, and he perceives that studentFLUENT is very well suited to be included with this textbook as companion software.
