Waste Incinerator |
Rapid Design Verification for Reduced Risk
Concern about the potential for thermal stratification in a proposed waste incinerator led the John Zink Company to pursue CFD analysis in order to test the performance of a new design. Fluent began the project by generating a base case model for normal firing conditions, including multiple fuel ports and waste streams in a large 3D model. The base case was validated against estimates of exit levels of temperature and species. Next, the CFD model was modified to simulate turn-down conditions, where concern about stratification arises. Using the CFD prediction of temperature distribution in the incinerator, the analysts were able to conclude that hot spots were unlikely to occur and the design was deemed ready for field installation.
The complex CFD analysis conducted by Fluent's staff gave John Zink confidence to proceed with the field installation.
