Application Highlights from the Worldwide Users' Group Meetings

Oil Production
AMEC Process and Energy Ltd

This paper, presented at the UK UGM, highlighted the use of CFD to optimize the performance of an existing offshore produced water flash drum (PWFD). CFD identified performance problems in the vessel and showed how the vessel could be improved without weight increases and with minimal interruption to oil production.

The existing conditions were modeled, analyzed, visualized and validated against site data. Then a series of analyses was performed, each tackling different redesign concepts. The design studies showed that the objectives for the vessel, including good residence time, dominant horizontal flow, and no re-entrainment, can be achieved.

AMEC Process and Energy Ltd's Advanced Engineering Services department (Aberdeen, UK) highlighted the use of CFD to optimize the performance of an offshore produced water flash drum. CFD identified problems in the vessel and showed how it could be improved without weight increases and with minimal interruption to oil production.
