Heat Exchanger Design
ABB Ricerca

Normally, experimental evaluation of a finned tube heat exchanger design is difficult and expensive. In this presentation at the Italian UGM, however, ABB Ricerca showed how CFD can produce a reliable, validated numerical model of a heat exchanger system in a short time, and at substantial savings.

The 3D heat exchanger model was developed by isolating the fifth and sixth tube rows (at which point fully developed flow conditions are attained). The approach allows the problem to be solved using a periodic, conjugate heat transfer analysis. The FLUENT/UNS modeling provided ABB Ricerca with both visualization and detailed evaluation of the fluid dynamic and heat transfer mechanisms in the heat exchanger. Validation of the CFD results against existing correlations and experimental data confirmed the reliability of these conclusions.

ABB Ricerca examined the periodic flow and heat transfer in this finned tube heat exchanger. Validation against available correlations and data confirmed the modeling accuracy.
