Pakistan is in the process of changing from an agricultural economy to an industrial state. The government has paved the way for the development and promotion of the general engineering sector. The use of CFD technology is on the rise, and has shown early promise for the automotive, aerospace, and HVAC industries. Simcon International, the leading CAD/CAM/CAE organization in Pakistan and the local Fluent distributor, reports that FLUENT has been licensed by two of the top academic institutions in Pakistan: N.E.D. University of Engineering & Technology, and the National University of Science and Technology (NUST).

N.E.D. University, formerly known as Prince of Wales College, is the oldest and most prestigious engineering institute in the region. On-going research projects include cavitation, fuel cells, and heat transfer. To contribute to these and other engineering projects, FLUENT was chosen because it caters to a wide range of applications. The university has successfully set up a five-PC cluster and is planning for a fifty-PC cluster in the near future. FlowLab is also being planned for the undergraduate curriculum. NUST is the only institute offering a doctoral program in CFD in Pakistan. The faculty members, who are highly qualified in CFD, are eager to incorporate the software into their curriculum and research activities.

Simcon has conducted several seminars in Pakistan to increase the awareness of CFD technology. They believe that wide acceptance of CFD depends on developing the technical expertise within the region, and that this expertise will gradually emerge from the academic user base. Centralized computing facilities, also in the planning stages, should help companies of all sizes adopt this important technology.
