Italian University Researcher Wins Prestigious Award

 

Dr. Francesco Migliavacca

November 16, 2001 was an important day for LaBS, the Laboratory of Biological Structure Mechanics of Politecnico di Milano in Milan, Italy. Dr. Francesco Migliavacca, a member of the LaBS staff, was awarded Le Scienze Medal for his outstanding accomplishments in the study of the haemodynamics after paediatric cardiac surgery. His work consists of mathematical modeling using FIDAP and FLUENT software. At the same time Dr. Migliavacca was also awarded a Medal from Mr. Ciampi, President of the Italian Republic.

Le Scienze is the Italian edition of the journal Scientific American. Le Scienze Medal was established in 2000 and is presented to three young researchers, working in Italy, whose results have been internationally acknowledged, in recognition of distinguished contributions to the different fields of science. This year the conferral ceremony took place at the Università degli Studi, Milan, and the Awards were presented to Dr. Migliavacca (for engineering), Dr. Roberto Bini (for chemistry) and Dr. Elena Cattaneo (for medicine) by Prof. Enrico Decleva and Prof. Paolo Mantegazza, Rector and Rector Emeritus of the Università degli Studi, respectively.
