In October 2000, the release of POLYFLOW 3.8 was announced. An exciting
new feature of this version is the expert system (ES), which acts like
a technical support engineer integrated into the code. In essence, the
ES tracks what the user is doing and investigates the possible implications
of different actions. It can issue messages or make decisions and take
action automatically. While the simulation is running, the ES is continuously
collecting information to help improve convergence. If convergence difficulties
are encountered, the ES can perform diagnostic tests and file reports
with suggestions for the user. The ES can request additional iterations
if convergence is close but the number of requested iterations has been
completed. It can stop a simulation that is not converging. It can also
give recommendations about ways to reduce the memory requirements. These
measures are only a first step towards future plans to minimize the interaction
required by a user during complex problem analysis.
