ICI Laboratory Simulates Gas Release Impact

The ICI Laboratory in Runcorn, UK, is located in the open countryside of Northwest England. Managers at the complex were concerned about whether or not a common fume cupboard vent located in the center of the building was having an adverse impact on the purity of air entering HVAC intakes in the side of the neighboring buildings on the site.

Near-ground vector streaks and predicted gas release plume

The FLUENT CFD code and GAMBIT preprocessor were used to model various atmospheric wind profiles and wind speeds approaching the laboratory complex from various incident angles and the resultant vent plume trajectory was plotted. Human impact toxicity studies such as these are becoming more and more common in chemical plants and laboratories across the world. CFD is uniquely capable of quickly and inexpensively assessing environmental dispersion of cross-plant releases and their interaction with various neighboring buildings and the local terrain.
